FEATURES
DESCRIPTION
MAP Repeata "B" Packers offer all the benefits of a drillable packer plus the added feature of easy retrievability. The packer is run and set like a drillable packer. It uses the same seal nipple assemblies and accessories such as expendable plugs. Tubing adapters and seal bore extensions that are available for MAP drillable packers.
The Repeata "B" is set with a wireline pressure setting tool. During setting, the packer central mandrel is held stationary and all outside components are pushed downward. This action first anchors the slips then expands the packing, both of which are then held in place by the releasable lock-ring that ratchets downward during the setting procedure. At a predetermined force the packer release ring parts thus freeing the setting tool from the packer. The Repeata "B" is locked in place with its built-in setting features and requires no separate apparatus to maintain the set. Production tubing -expansion or contraction has no effect on the set of the packer. Also the tubing can be pulled without accidentally releasing the packer.
During pressure applications the bi-directional one-piece slips are held firmly set by the releasable lock-ring. This combination allows high differential pressure applications above or below the packer. Another important feature is the placement of the slips below the packing where they are protected from sand and debris settlement that could bind and prohibit the slip release making retrieval difficult.
Retrieving the Repeata "B" is simply accomplished by use of a companion-retrieving tool. This tool can be run on tubing or sandline and latches onto the packer retrieving neck with set down weight only required. Retrieving is accomplished by a straight upward pull varying generally from 7,000 to 10,000 pounds tension. This action pulls a tapered wedge located inside the releasing crossover assembly up inside the releasable lock-ring and expands the lock-ring off the ratchet threads of the packer central mandrel. The expanded packing elements then are free to relax to their original shape. Continued upward pull will remove the top cone from under the upper half of the bi-directional slip and allow the slip cage to pull the lower half of the bi-directional Slip off the bottom cone.
The Repeata "B" can also be retrieved with electric wireline by using the same wireline pressure-setting tool that set it. A unique wireline retrieving tool is attached to the setting tool that reverses conventional sitting notion. This combination is then run and latched onto the packer and the setting tool is initiated thus creating the action, which completely unseats the Repeata "B" for retrieval.
Installing packer to pressure setting tool:
The MAP 3-1/2 Repeata "B" Production Packer can be run with Map or Gearhart 2-1/8 O.D. or Baker No. 10 pressure setting tools. The setting adapters contain Map or Gearhart thread connections thus Baker adapter Kit (052-5306-052) must be used with Baker No. 10 Setting tools. The Kit converts the lower end of the Baker tool to Map/Gearhart connections.
1. Thread setting tool lock-ring fully up on setting tool bottom cylinder. Install setting sleeve (052-5306-078) fully on setting tool bottom cylinder.
2. Screw adapter rod fully into bottom piston of setting tool.
3. Advance the setting sleeve down until it bottoms on shoulder of retrieving neck (item 2) of packer. Advance the setting tool lock-ring down and tighten it against top of setting sleeve.
Running and setting packer:
The 3-1/2 Repeata "B" Packer is run to setting depth in the same manner as a conventional drillable packer or bridge plug. The packer components are shear pinned as a safety measure against premature setting caused by well conditions. Line speed should not exceed 200 feet per minute while running. During setting there may be at least two "kicks" shown on the weight indicator. One kick will indicate shear pins shearing and the last kick will indicate the setting shear pins parting. After setting the packer, pick up the setting tool a few feet then set back down and tag the packer to assure the packer is in place.
Retrieving procedure:
To retrieve the 3-1/2 Repeata "B" Packer make up the Model "B" Tubing Retrieving Tool assembly (052-5310-059) along with a 5-foot production tube or tubing. Lower the retrieving tool until it latches over the retrieving neck of the packer. No tubing rotation is required for latching.
If differential pressures exist across the packer (as would be the case if the packer had an expendable plug or flapper valve in place) the pressure must be equalized before unsetting the packer. Before latching onto the packer the production tube attached to the retrieving tool is used to expend the plug or open the flapper valve thus equalizing pressure.
Once the retrieving tool has latched onto the packer, retrieval consists of pulling between 7,000-11,000 lbs. upstrain at the packer. This action releases the packer lock-ring, which allows the packing elements to retract. Continued upstrain will then pull the slips loose from the casing and into their retracted position. The retrieving tool features a right-hand release safety feature. Should the packer fail to release, the retrieving tool and tubing string can be recovered by taking a 5,000 lb. upstrain and rotating right approximately 12 turns. This action frees the retrieving tool from the packer retrieving neck.

1. Place body (item 22) in vise. Caution: Vise jaws should close on body immediately below ratchet threads.
2. Spread lock ring (item 12) with a screwdriver and install on upper end of body. Slide lock ring down until it rests on the ratchet threads.
3. Install quick-change sub (item 9) on upper end of body and slide it down until it touches lock ring (item 12).
4. Install o-rings (items 4 & 7) on latch receiver (item 5) then screw to body (item 22). Remove body from vise and place upper most end of latch receiver in vise. Do not vise down hard on latch receiver. File away any burrs that were made on body by vise jaws.
5. Check the releasing crossover assembly (item 10) for freedom of movement. Oil the inside of the crossover mechanism. Screw releasing crossover assembly to the quick-change sub (item 9) until it bottoms. Then back off and install socket cap screws (item 11).
6. Screw top guide ring (item 14) to releasing crossover assembly. Install socket set screw (item 13). Then install, one shear screw (item 8) in releasing crossover assembly.
7. Slide bottom guide ring (item 17), end packing elements (item 15) and center packing element (item 16) on packing mandrel (item 18). Slide this assembly on body and screw to top guide ring (item 14). Next slide o-ring (item 19) on body and in place inside lower end of packing mandrel. Screw seal nut (item 20 to packing mandrel (item 18). Be certain the seal nut is fully screwed in place Make this connection only semi-wrench tight as over-torquing may distort the threads or damage the body and o-ring.
8. Screw pick-up sleeve (item 21) to bottom guide ring (item 17) then rotate pick-up sleeve until shear screw holes line up with the mating holes in seal nut. Install, one shear screw (item 8).
9. Slide top cone (item 23) inside of slip housing (item 24) and place this assembly partially on lower en of body (item 22) leaving windows of slip housing extending off body. Next, place a slip spring (item 25 into recess provided in the center of slip segment (item 26). Place slip segment inside slip housing making sure the slip spring is in place in both the slip segment and in the hole provided in the slip housing. Repeat this procedure until all (4) slips are installed. An optional method of installing the slips consist of using a socket cap screw of suitable length installed from the outside of the slip housing and threaded into the slip segment. This will compress the slip spring and also hold the slip segment in place while installing the remaining slips. If this procedure is used, do not forget to remove the screw after installation is complete. Next, slide the top cone and slip housing up the body and screw the top cone to the pick-up sleeve. Install socket set screw (item 13). Install shear screw (item 8) in slip housing (item 24).
10. Install o-ring (item 27) in bottom cone (item 28) then screw to body (item 22). Make connection wrench tight. Install socket set screw (item 13). Screw thread protector (item 30) to bottom cone and install socket set screw (item 29).
